Small bowel obstruction
Abdominal x-ray (AP view; supine position)
Multiple grossly dilated (>3 cm) loops of bowel are visible. The dilated bowel is identifiable as small bowel because of the presence of plicae circulares, which are hyperdense mucosal folds that extend completely across the entire width of the small bowel lumen. The stacked dilated bowel loops in the LUQ of the abdomen have a ladder-like appearance.
This is the typical appearance of distal small bowel obstruction.
