Flashcard 612: PEP carboxykinase is induced by _____ and cortisol
Answer: glucagon
Extra: PEPCK converts oxaloacetate to phosphoenolpyruvate. It is regulated by transcriptional induction (e.g., via glucagon/cAMP and cortisol).
Flashcard 613: Does hemolysis result in unconjugated or conjugated hyperbilirubinemia?
_____
Answer: Unconjugated
Extra:
* due to heme breakdown; high levels of UCB overwhelm the conjugating ability of the liver

Flashcard 620: What differentiates **I-cell disease** from most other **lysosomal storage diseases**?\n_____
Answer: I-cell has a mixed accumulation of substrates forming inclusion bodies
Extra: I-cell disease (mucolipidosis II) is caused by a deficiency in N-acetylglucosaminyl-1-phosphotransferase, which is required to tag lysosomal enzymes with mannose-6-phosphate. Without this signal, enzymes are secreted instead of being sent to lysosomes. As a result, lysosomes lack multiple enzymes and accumulate a variety of undigested materials, seen as inclusion bodies.
