Flashcard 272: The trigeminal nucleus located in the rostral pons that mediates fine touch and pressure from the face is the _____.
Answer: principal sensory nucleus of V
Extra: The principal sensory nucleus of V (also called the chief sensory nucleus) is located in the mid-to-rostral pons. It receives discriminative touch, vibration, and pressure sensations from the face (analogous to the dorsal column-medial lemniscus system of the body).
Other trigeminal nuclei:
- Mesencephalic nucleus: Proprioception.
- Spinal trigeminal nucleus: Pain and temperature.
- Motor nucleus of V: Muscles of mastication.

Flashcard 273: The _____ is the brainstem tract that carries vibration, fine touch, and proprioception from the contralateral body to the thalamus.
Answer: medial lemniscus
Extra: The medial lemniscus is formed by the decussation of internal arcuate fibers in the medulla.

Flashcard 274: The cortical area located in the **postcentral gyrus** is the _____.
Answer: primary somatosensory cortex (Brodmann areas 3, 1, 2)
Extra: The primary somatosensory cortex is located in the postcentral gyrus and processes somatic sensations including touch, proprioception, pain, and temperature.

Flashcard 276: The _____ is a part of the midbrain that contains descending motor tracts (e.g., corticospinal tract).
Answer: Cerebral peduncle
Extra: The cerebral peduncles are located on the ventral (anterior) aspect of the midbrain, lateral to the interpeduncular fossa.

Gustatory pathway
The first neuron of the taste pathway is located in the ganglia of the facial, vagus, and glossopharyngeal nerves. The afferent gustatory nerve fibers join to form the nerve tract that projects to the nucleus of the solitary tract.
Second-order neurons project from the medulla oblongata in three distinct branches. Projections to the hypothalamus and amygdala transmit the emotional component of taste perception. Projections to the ventral posterior nucleus (VPM) of the thalamus transmit to the gustatory cortex at the foot of the postcentral gyrus for conscious taste perception.
Flashcard 279: Cranial nerve **CN VIII** is the _____ nerve.
Answer: vestibulocochlear

_____
Answer: CN I (olfactory)
