Dermatitis and Eczema Flashcard Deck - 10 Cards
Flashcard 11: What lesion is associated with chorea?
Answer: basal ganglia
Flashcard 12: What lesion is associated with intention tremor?
Answer: cerebellar lesion/dysfunction
Flashcard 13: dystonia
Answer: sustained involuntary muscle contractions
Flashcard 14: postural tremor
Answer: type of action tremor; vibratory tremor when holding a posture, exacerbated by intentional movement
Flashcard 15: coordination of trunk
Answer: medial cerebellum
Flashcard 16: What is the purpose of the CNS blood-brain barrier?
Answer: limits diffusion of blood components or solutes into CSF/CNS --> protection from infection and intoxication
Flashcard 17: What triplet is associated with Friedrich's ataxia?
Answer: GAA
mnemonic: X-Girlfriend's First Aid Helped Ace My Test
Flashcard 18: Genetic basis of Friedreich's ataxia?
Answer: Autosomal recessive, GAA triplet repeat disorder, FXN gene (Frataxin) expansion.
Extra: Friedreich Ataxia:
- Genetics: GAA repeat on Chromosome 9
- Clinical: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (most common cause of death), diabetes mellitus, kyphoscoliosis, pes cavus.
- Neuro: Cerebellar atrophry, degeneration of posterior columns and spinocerebellar tracts.
Mnemonic: X-Girlfriend's First Aid Helped Ace My Test (FXN gene, GAA repeat, Friedreich Ataxia, Myocardial involvement, Type 1 Diabetes).
Flashcard 19: What is the pathophysiology and cardinal clinical features of Parkinson's disease?
Answer: A degenerative disorder of the CNS characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc).
Extra: - **Symptoms:** Resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, postural instability (TRAP).
- **Pathology:** Lewy bodies (α-synuclein), depigmentation of SNc.
- **Neurochemistry:** Decreased dopamine in SNc.
- **Treatment Classes:**
- Dopamine precursor (Levodopa)
- Dopamine agonists (Pramipexole, Ropinirole)
- Increase dopamine release (Amantadine)
- Dopamine breakdown inhibitors (MAO-B inhibitors, COMT inhibitors)
- Antimuscarinics (Benztropine)
Flashcard 20: hemiballismus
Answer: sudden, wild flailing of limb or limbs on one side of body
Extra: Usually due to a lesion in the contralateral subthalamic nucleus (e.g., lacunar stroke).
