Introduction to Nutritional Programs - India's Health Fuel
- Combat India's high malnutrition rates: undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and rising overnutrition.
- Aim: Improve nutritional status of vulnerable groups, boosting national health.
- Key beneficiaries: Children (0-6 years), pregnant & lactating women, adolescent girls.
- Requires inter-sectoral coordination for effective delivery.
⭐ POSHAN Abhiyaan (NNM), launched 2018, targets reduction in stunting (2% p.a.), undernutrition (2% p.a.), anemia (3% p.a.), and low birth weight (2% p.a.).
Flagship Programs: ICDS & MDM - Mighty Meal Missions
-
ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) - 1975
- Targets: Children 0-6 yrs, Pregnant & Lactating Mothers (P&LM), Adolescent Girls.
- Services (Anganwadi Centres): SNP, Immunization, Health check-ups, Referral, Pre-school Ed, NHE.
- SNP (kcal/protein g):
- Child (6m-6yr): 500 / 12-15
- Severe Mal.: 800 / 20-25
- P&LM: 600 / 18-20
- Ministry: Women & Child Dev.
-
MDM (Mid-Day Meal) - Now PM-POSHAN (2021)
- Launched 1995 (NP-NSPE).
- Targets: School children (Class I-VIII), Govt./Govt.-aided schools.
- Aims: ↑Nutrition, ↑Enrollment, ↑Attendance, ↓Classroom hunger.
- Nutrition (kcal/protein g):
- Primary (I-V): 450 / 12
- Upper Primary (VI-VIII): 700 / 20
- Ministry: Education.

⭐ ICDS is one of the world's largest and most unique programs for early childhood care and development.
Micronutrient Deficiency Control Programs - Deficiency Destroyers
- National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP)
- Universal Salt Iodization (USI).
- Iodine: ≥15 ppm (consumer), ≥30 ppm (production).
- National Vitamin A Prophylaxis Programme (NVAPP)
- Target: Children 6 months - 5 years.
- Dose: 1 lakh IU (6-11 mo, once), then 2 lakh IU every 6 months (1-5 yrs). Total 9 doses.

- Anaemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) / National Iron Plus Initiative (NIPI)
- Strategy: 6x6x6. Iron Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation.
- Key Doses:
- Children (6-59m): 20mg Fe + 100µg FA.
- Adolescents (10-19y): 60mg Fe + 500µg FA (weekly).
- Pregnant/Lactating: 60mg Fe + 500µg FA daily (180 days ANC, 180 days PNC).
⭐ Vitamin A (2 lakh IU) is also given to post-partum mothers within 6 weeks of delivery.
POSHAN Abhiyaan & Other Initiatives - Nutrition's New Wave
- POSHAN Abhiyaan (NNM): Launched 2018. Goal: Improve nutritional outcomes. Aims: ↓ stunting, underweight, anemia, LBW.
- Targets (annual): Stunting/Underweight ↓2%; Anemia ↓3%; LBW ↓2%.
- Focus: First 1000 days. Key Pillars: Tech (ICDS-CAS), Convergence, Jan Andolan, Capacity Building.
- Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB): T3 strategy (Test-Treat-Talk), IFA supplementation.
⭐ AMB Target: ↓ Anemia prevalence by 3% points/year (children, adolescents, WRA 15-49 yrs).
- Eat Right India (FSSAI): Promotes safe, healthy, sustainable diets.
- Food Fortification: Key staples (rice, wheat, salt, milk, oil).
- National Deworming Day (NDD): Biannual; Albendazole 400mg for soil-transmitted helminths.

Monitoring & Impact of Programs - Gauging Gains
- Monitoring:
- Key Indicators: Anthropometry (stunting, wasting, underweight), anemia prevalence, Vitamin A deficiency.
- Surveys: NFHS (National Family Health Survey), CNNS (Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey).
- Reporting Systems: HMIS (Health Management Information System).
- Impact:
- Achievements: ↓ IMR, ↓ U5MR, ↓ child malnutrition (stunting).
- Challenges: Persistent anemia, micronutrient deficiencies, regional disparities, effective service delivery.
⭐ NFHS data is pivotal for tracking progress & guiding nutritional interventions in India.
