Introduction to Nutritional Programs - India's Health Fuel

Flagship Programs: ICDS & MDM - Mighty Meal Missions

  • ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) - 1975

    • Targets: Children 0-6 yrs, Pregnant & Lactating Mothers (P&LM), Adolescent Girls.
    • Services (Anganwadi Centres): SNP, Immunization, Health check-ups, Referral, Pre-school Ed, NHE.
    • SNP (kcal/protein g):
      • Child (6m-6yr): 500 / 12-15
      • Severe Mal.: 800 / 20-25
      • P&LM: 600 / 18-20
    • Ministry: Women & Child Dev.
  • MDM (Mid-Day Meal) - Now PM-POSHAN (2021)

    • Launched 1995 (NP-NSPE).
    • Targets: School children (Class I-VIII), Govt./Govt.-aided schools.
    • Aims: ↑Nutrition, ↑Enrollment, ↑Attendance, ↓Classroom hunger.
    • Nutrition (kcal/protein g):
      • Primary (I-V): 450 / 12
      • Upper Primary (VI-VIII): 700 / 20
    • Ministry: Education.

⭐ ICDS is one of the world's largest and most unique programs for early childhood care and development.

Micronutrient Deficiency Control Programs - Deficiency Destroyers

  • National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP)
    • Universal Salt Iodization (USI).
    • Iodine: ≄15 ppm (consumer), ≄30 ppm (production).
  • National Vitamin A Prophylaxis Programme (NVAPP)
    • Target: Children 6 months - 5 years.
    • Dose: 1 lakh IU (6-11 mo, once), then 2 lakh IU every 6 months (1-5 yrs). Total 9 doses.
    • Administering liquid vitamin to infant
  • Anaemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) / National Iron Plus Initiative (NIPI)
    • Strategy: 6x6x6. Iron Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation.
    • Key Doses:
      • Children (6-59m): 20mg Fe + 100µg FA.
      • Adolescents (10-19y): 60mg Fe + 500µg FA (weekly).
      • Pregnant/Lactating: 60mg Fe + 500µg FA daily (180 days ANC, 180 days PNC).

⭐ Vitamin A (2 lakh IU) is also given to post-partum mothers within 6 weeks of delivery.

POSHAN Abhiyaan & Other Initiatives - Nutrition's New Wave

  • POSHAN Abhiyaan (NNM): Launched 2018. Goal: Improve nutritional outcomes. Aims: ↓ stunting, underweight, anemia, LBW.
    • Targets (annual): Stunting/Underweight ↓2%; Anemia ↓3%; LBW ↓2%.
    • Focus: First 1000 days. Key Pillars: Tech (ICDS-CAS), Convergence, Jan Andolan, Capacity Building.
  • Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB): T3 strategy (Test-Treat-Talk), IFA supplementation.

    ⭐ AMB Target: ↓ Anemia prevalence by 3% points/year (children, adolescents, WRA 15-49 yrs).

  • Eat Right India (FSSAI): Promotes safe, healthy, sustainable diets.
  • Food Fortification: Key staples (rice, wheat, salt, milk, oil).
  • National Deworming Day (NDD): Biannual; Albendazole 400mg for soil-transmitted helminths.
