Acute diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon
Ultrasound of the sigmoid colon (longitudinal section)
The intestinal contour (white dotted line) shows multiple protrusions (sigma diverticula; white arrows). The wall of the sigmoid colon is thickened; it is not possible to distinguish between the layers and the surrounding tissue, but the usual reflection of the lumen can still be traced (white line). The pericolonic fat and greater omentum are inflamed and thus hyperechoic (yellow overlay).
The hypoechoic area (blue overlay) on the posterior of the colon is either free fluid or an abscess.
Diverticulosis
Double-contrast barium enema of the colon
Multiple diverticula in the colon can be seen (examples circled in green).
Diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon
Coronal, abdominal CT scan with contrast medium: Clear thickening of the sigmoid wall with visible traces of fluid in the pericolic fat (green area). The lumen of the sigmoid colon is narrowed due to the inflammation (shaded area). Intramural gas (arrows) in the region of the inflammation may suggest perforated diverticulitis without free communication with the peritoneum.
