Staining is usually our first step because it gives us immediate clues about the organism's morphology and cell wall structure.

• Gram Stain: The absolute gold standard. It divides bacteria into Gram-positive (purple) and Gram-negative (pink/red) based on their peptidoglycan layer.
• Acid-Fast Stain (Ziehl-Neelsen): Crucial for identifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These bugs have waxy cell walls that resist normal dyes.
• Special Stains: Like India Ink for Cryptococcus (shows that beautiful capsule) or Giemsa for malaria parasites and Chlamydia.
