Strangulated bowel
Intraoperative photograph of a patient presenting with mechanical bowel obstruction due to adhesions
The bowel loops appear edematous, distended, and congested. In the bowel loop on the left, the maroon discoloration and sloughing off of the serosal layer in patches are signs of gangrene.
This is the typical intraoperative appearance of strangulated bowel loops.
Small bowel ischemia
Intraoperative photograph of a patient with mechanical small bowel obstruction secondary to adhesions
Most of the visible small bowel appears hyperemic and congested. The bowel loops toward the right side of the image have a mottled red-black discoloration indicating gangrenous changes. A normal pink bowel loop is visible in the background.
